Word Families

We are learning about word families. When we know how to spell one word we can use this to help us spell others with the same sounds.

ball: call, fall, mall .....
ten: then, when, pen ...
down: frown, brown ....

ANZAC Poppies

We are learning to remember and celebrate our ANZAC heroes.

We are making a poppy wreath for the dawn service on ANZAC day.

It takes lots of perseverance and determination to make a poppy. We used our maths learning to measure two 10 cm squares.

We used this video to help us make our poppies.
We had to watch very carefully because cutting the poppy shape is quite tricky. But, we know that the best learning comes from making mistakes so we just kept trying until we got it right!

Here is the video if you want to make your own poppy.

Tyler being a superhero teaching his measuring skills
Blake carefully measuring accurately
Charlie and Dom measuring

Naomi checking her measurements are accurate
Busy working and thinking
Sam watching the video step by step

Holly carefully following the video step by step to make her poppy
Whetu opening up his poppy
Kamora-Lee so excited about her first poppy

Coopa and Marshall thinking and problem-solving. Lots of
great learning talking.

Fraction Fitness

We have been learning to find a fraction of a group or set. We had to work out what 1/4 and 1/2 of a set was eg. 1/4 of 12=3

Untitled from tracey hill on Vimeo.
It was so wonderful to hear the children debating and discussing fractions and justifying their decisions and strategies used with each other.

I Spy With My Little Eye......

A holiday challenge: Use your superhero spying eyes to check out what we discovered in our classroom after school on the last day of Term 1.

Freddy the Frog! was hiding in the tank!

Room 1617, thank you for being such amazing superhero learners this term. Happy holidays.  Play lots, laugh lots! From Mrs Ramsay and Mrs H.

Fractions fraction fractions

We have been learning to find a set of a fraction.

We had to make different shaped frog ponds and break the ponds into different fractions. We then needed to work out how many frogs or frogs eggs would be in each part of the pond.
Ashwin showing a different way to break his pond up in to quarters
Emily had 8 frogs found half of 8 then half of 4
1/4 of 8=2
Sadie has made a pentagon shaped pond and has 16 frogs eggs.
1/2 of 16=8
Dom sharing his thinking with Ruben. Lots of discussion about how to
make an octogon and then how they would cut it in to quarters.
Super determination and thinking boys!

Gwen thinking how she can find 1/4 of 24. She is trying 5 frogs eggs in each quarter of the pond.
She worked out she needed to add 1 more to each 1/4 of the pond.
1/4 of 24=6

We have also been learning how to write fractions that are bigger than one whole.
Georgina and Naomi's thinking

Keiarliya's thinking

Joseph and Jordan's thinking
Charlotte and Jack's thinking

Tyler and Maddie's thinking

We have been learning how to make a fraction of a set or group

We had to think about what we know about a whole and fractions to create a fraction caterpillar to share the different ways to show 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/5, 1/6, 1/8, 1/10.
