Kowhai Hub Jump Off

We have been learning to skip. On Friday, all of Kowhai hub got together for a JUMP OFF !

We saw lots of determination and perseverance in learning to skip lots of different ways.

Tennis

We had a special visitor, Mr Cottrell, who came and taught us tennis skills.  

We learnt how to hold the tennis racket correctly.

We hold the end of the racket so we can reach further with our racket.

We hold the racket on top (we put the racket on the ground and pick it up to get our grip right). 

We also learnt to play a forehand shot.

We point with our left hand to where we want to hot the ball
We swing the racket through like an aeroplane and catch in our other hand after we have hit the ball.

Marching

Last weekend we were very privileged to march with Miss Stacey and a group of marchers in the blossom parade. Miss Stacey has been teaching us marching for the past few weeks and very kindly invited us to participate in the blossom parade.

We are so very very proud of our marchers for the enthusiasm, commitment and determination they showed representing Parkvale School in the blossom parade. It was a big challenge marching in front of such a big crowd. All of the marchers did their absolute best even when it was blowing freezing winds and raining icy cold raindrops!

Room 1617 marchers you are superstars. We are so proud of you! You made our hearts smile with PRIDE.

Marching

Every Wednesday and Thursday Miss Stacey comes to Parkvale to teach us marching.

We are learning that marching is quite tricky but a lot of fun. We need to have lots of discipline because everyone in a marching team has a job to do to stay together, in line and in a block.

We always lead with our left foot and start each step on the back of our foot. We have to listen to the music very carefully to hear the beat and step with our left foot on each beat.

   

To help us stay in line, Miss Stacey uses callipers with chalk to measure our length of pace (the gap between each of our steps). She puts a chalk mark on the concrete to help us know where to stand.

We are learning lots of new marching vocabulary;

Handgrips means keeping our hands closed and at our side
Covering means to stay in line with person in front of you
Dressing means staying in line with the person next to you
Block means a group of marchers standing in their lines
Rank means the line of marchers in the block from left to right
File means the line of marchers in the block from front to back

We learnt a chant to help us practice keeping our step with the beat
I left my bag in New Orleans and all I got was a can of beans so I left, I left, I left, right, left.

We learnt to make a new formation. Oh...and had some dancing time after.

Recycling

We have been learning about how important it is to reduce, reuse and recycle.

 Did you know that not all plastics are the same? 

We looked at some different plastics items and grouped them according to the numbers found on the plastic. The recycling number for plastic is found inside a triangle. It was easy to spot on some things but we had to look carefully to find it on other things. Some plastic items did not have a recycling symbol or number and this means it can not be recycled.

to find out they can be recycled

Some lids and bottles had different recycling numbers.
We thought this was strange.

Blake found out that plastic shopping bags do not have a recycling number but
the small plastic bags have a recycling number of 4.
