Tuakana Teina

We are learning to read maps, cross roads safely and appreciate art in our environment. 

Using a map of our school we followed an art trail around our school. 

It is tricky reading a map. We used the landmarks on the map to help us figure out where to find different pieces of art around our school. We learnt to look down on the map like a bird (birds eye view).

Room 1617 were buddies for the Year 1 and 2 children in our hub.

Tuakana Teina is when an older person teaches a younger person. Room 1617 did a great job of teaching their buddies and
showing them how to complete the trail rather than doing it all for them. 

Gymnastics

Parkvale gymnasts performed at the Hastinsg Gymnastics Festival with PRIDE. The children worked really hard to refine their routines over lunchtime practices on Monday and Wednesday showing amazing commitment and determination. 

Each gymnast performed on the vault, beam and floor. Mrs H and Mrs Ramsay are so proud of all the children who represented Parkvale so well.

A huge thank you to Mrs Wallace who supported us every Monday and Wednesday lunchtime. We really appreciate all the encouragement you gave to the children. We could not have done it without you. 

Rippa Rugby

Last week Parkvale entered 9 teams in the Rippa Rugby tournament held at Ron Giorgi Park in Flaxmere. It was a great day of sport with awesome team work, good sportsmanship, competition and lots of fun!

Every player gave it their best! Parkvale H got into quarterfinals in the championship round and Parkvale C won the cup final game!

A big thank you to all the parents, family and whanau who managed and supported teams on the day.

Learning at the Transfer Station and the Landfill

Our trip to the Transfer Station and the Landfill was really interesting and the adults and children learnt lots from our tour guide, Mrs Versey. 

We began our day at at Transfer Station. This is where we, or the rubbish truck, takes our rubbish and recycling. From here our rubbish and recycling is sorted. It is called the Transfer Station because our rubbish and recycling is transferred from here to its new home.

After that we were excited to wear high visibility vests to keep us safe on our way to the landfill. 

 

We saw what we thought was a big hill but it was actually a big hill of rubbish...our rubbish from the people of Hawke's Bay. 

It is hard to imagine this hill is filled with rubbish!

We loved watching the compactor. Did you know it could squash
a bus into the size of a toy bus?

The landfill...it is filling up fast.

The leachate pond catches all the water that comes off the landfill.
The water in this pond is then changed from yucky water to cleaner water
so it can be used to water the grass and trees around the landfill.

We learnt that we need to change what we do with our waste 
so that all the hills in Hawke's Bay don't turn into hills of rubbish. 
Mrs Versey left us with a challenge;

Make our BIG rubbish piles SMALLER!
