Kowhai Hub Jump Off

We have been learning to skip. On Friday, all of Kowhai hub got together for a JUMP OFF !

We saw lots of determination and perseverance in learning to skip lots of different ways.

Tennis

We had a special visitor, Mr Cottrell, who came and taught us tennis skills.  

We learnt how to hold the tennis racket correctly.

We hold the end of the racket so we can reach further with our racket.

We hold the racket on top (we put the racket on the ground and pick it up to get our grip right). 

We also learnt to play a forehand shot.

We point with our left hand to where we want to hot the ball
We swing the racket through like an aeroplane and catch in our other hand after we have hit the ball.

Improper Fractions

WALA improper fractions. We know that this means fractions that are bigger than 1 whole.

We know that the number down the bottom of a fraction is the denominator and tells us how many pieces are needed to make the whole. The top number, the numerator tells us how many parts of the whole there are.

5/3 means 3 parts are needed to make a whole and there are 5 parts.

Making fractions with playdough helped us to work out how many wholes and how many parts.

Buster the Rabbit

Room 1617 have a travel bug called Buster the Bunny. Buster the Bunny is going to go travelling around the New Zealand and hopefully the world. Whenever Buster the Bunny goes somewhere new  a message is sent to us and we can find out where he is on the maps in our classroom. 

We walked down to a special place to leave Buster for somebody else to pick up and take on a journey somewhere. 

When we walked to Busters' drop off we needed to cross roads safely. We have been learning how to cross the road and keep ourselves safe. We looked left, right and left again and listened carefully. We noticed cars along the road, cars turning, cars coming out of driveways and bicycles.

Superhero Learning

The Superheroes of Room 1617 have worked so hard all term being wonderful managing self learners. Mrs Ramsay and Mrs H are so so proud of all you have achieved throughout the term. We celebrated our learning with ice cream spiders. YUM YUM!

Probability - The Chance of Something Happening

WALA probability or the chance of something happening. We can use our fractions knowledge to work out the fraction of a chance of something happening. Playing 'chance' games is a great way to explore fractions and the chance of something happening.

We can create a Singapore Bar to show the whole and the fraction.

Recycling

We have been learning about how important it is to reduce, reuse and recycle.

 Did you know that not all plastics are the same? 

We looked at some different plastics items and grouped them according to the numbers found on the plastic. The recycling number for plastic is found inside a triangle. It was easy to spot on some things but we had to look carefully to find it on other things. Some plastic items did not have a recycling symbol or number and this means it can not be recycled.

to find out they can be recycled

Some lids and bottles had different recycling numbers.
We thought this was strange.

Blake found out that plastic shopping bags do not have a recycling number but
the small plastic bags have a recycling number of 4.
