Measuring Length

We are learning to measure accurately. To be accurate measurers we know
  • measuring has a start and end point
  • we don't leave any gaps
  • we have to write what we are measuring in like cm for centimeters
  • we start measuring on zero or cm (not on the end of the ruler)
We have been playing golf to learn how to measure accurately. We measure how far away from the hole we are after 6 shots. It is much trickier than you think.
Aria having her last shot

How close will Sienna get?
Yay, Caitlin scored
Maddi measuring. She needed to line up her rulers
carefully
Ashley the accurate measurer
Charlie determined to get the ball in the hole

Kamora-Lee making sure she measures
from the 0 on the ruler
Charlotte and Marcus working out how many cm away the ball is.

Jasmine carefully measuring

Dom and Jessica working together to measure how far
away the ball is.

We have been learning how to write a blurb for a book. It is tricky because we had to not give too much detail but also give the reader some clues about what will happen in the story. We learnt a question is a good way to hook the reader in.

Jack making different browns
Jessica blending the pastels to make different colours
Katie making different greens
Sadie with lots of different browns on her tree

We created imaginative tree houses. They are all so very unique. Keep looking on the blog we will soon share some great writing about our tree houses.

Reading

We have a wonderful new learning space. Thank you Mr Gifkins we love to learn in our new space.

Reading lots and lots is very enjoyable and one way we get better at our reading. Reading with a buddy means someone gets to listen to our fluent reading, can support us when we need it and we can enjoy a book with someone else.

Room 1617 are great reading buddies.

Jessica and Ashley enjoying their book together
Joseph and Zepahniah reading together
Katie practising reading fluently
Zack and Whetu giggling about their book
Caitlin listening to Janice reading her book

During reading time we have been working on making connections to a text. Making connections help us comprehend texts at a deeper level. We can make a connection to an experience we have had (text to self) or a connection we have from another text (text to text connection).
You may see your child put their hands on their shoulders- this means they have a connection.

Together we read a poem about hedgehogs called Midnight Snack.

We created Pic Collages about the connections we made when reading the poem. Look on the children's individual blogs to see more connections.

Onomatopoeia

We have been learning about sound words called onomatopoeia. Great authors can use onomatopoeia in their writing so the reader can imagine what sounds are happening in a story.

We began by having a competition between boys and girls who could come up with the most onomatopoeia words. We used these words to create a visual representation of the word.

Louisa

Sam R

Zephaniah

Niamh

Chahat

Jack C

Zack

Jack W

Mason

We wrote onomatopoeia poems. Each line had to begin with a sound word. We had the choice of writing about summer or superheroes.

Swish! Swish! The waves are crashing on the shore.
Crack as I  bite into a freezing cold ice block.
Buzz! Buzz! Buzz as the bees admire the pretty flowers.
Glug! Glug! Glug as the wind blows the leaves and makes them fly in the air.
Chirp! Chirp! The baby bird sang all day.

Authors Charlotte and Sienna

Clip-pity clop I am riding on my pony.
Swish! Swosh! The water went as I floated down the lazy river.
Drip drip honey dripped down from the bees hive.
Snap snap the crab is snapping on my leg in the water.

Authors Chahat and Maddie

Splash! Splash went the waves.
Slurp slurp the ice cream dribbled down my chin.
Drip drip my sweat went down my back.
Squelch! Squelch the suncream went over my body.

Authors Katie and Angus M

Kaboom! The Joker exploded a building.
Crash Dragon Claw punched the Joker.
Swish the bad guy exploded into flames.
Gulp Dragon Claw devoured the Joker.
Woosh the Superhero rushed into his lair on Te Mata Peak.
ZZZZ Dragon Claw was fast asleep from a busy day of saving.

Authors Mac and Jospeh

Swish as I turned into a superhero.
Broom !Broom! I raced on my motorbike.
Zoom I sped off to save innocent people.
Kaboom! I punched the baddy into space.
Swish as I turn back into a little boy.

Authors Ashwin and Aria
