We are learning to calculate the perimeter of shapes. The perimeter is the distance around a shape.
This was our problem.
We worked in groups to create Gnome School.

We were thinking about the easiest way to add the numbers together.
We looked for numbers that connected together like a jigsaw
-the numbers that make 10 eg. 6+4
-the numbers that make 20 eg. 13+7
-doubles we knew eg. 4+4 so we knew 40+40

The mathematicians problem-solved to create shapes with a given perimeter. We were so proud of how the superheroes of Room 1617 showed so much perseverance and team work to create their schools.
We then made icing. We needed to measure accurately and think carefully about what we know about fractions.
We worked out how to measure 1/4 tsp of butter
We needed to add 4 tbs of icing sugar but we had a 1/2 Tbsp measure
so
1/2+1/2+1/2+1/2+1/2+1/2+1/2+1/2=4 tablespoons
We have been learning how to make different shades and tones of colours. If you look carefully you will see we tried to make 7 different tones of each colour.

We created imaginative tree houses. They are all so very unique. Keep looking on the blog we will soon share some great writing about our tree houses.
We made ice volcanoes they were lots of fun. We were thinking of all the amazing vocabulary we could use in our writing while creating and erupting the ice volcanoes.

Exploring the volcano
We are learning to use a hook to begin our writing. A hook makes the reader feel excited to keep reading our writing. When we write we are always thinking about the reader.
Spit spit the volcano started to erupt. The lava steamed to the bottom of the crevices down the side...it looked like red boiling water sliding to the bottom fast.

How to make an ice
volcano
Materials
1 plastic bowl
1 spoon
1 sheet of plastic
1 small ball
2/3 bowl Water
1/3 bowl Baking soda
Food Colouring
Vinegar
Freezer
Method
1)Place a small ball inside a bowl.
2)Line the bowl with plastic wrap so that the golf ball is
underneath and the plastic comes up over the sides.
3) Fill the bowl with a mixture of baking soda and water. It
needs to be about 1/3 baking soda and 2/3 water. Make sure the mixture is
covering the ball.
4) Drip in
about 4 drops of food colouring (you choose the colour).
5)Leave in
the freezer overnight.
6)Take out
of freezer and pull the plastic and the ball out.
7) Squirt
vinegar into the crater (hole) to find out what happens.
We have been learning about sound words called onomatopoeia. Great authors can use onomatopoeia in their writing so the reader can imagine what sounds are happening in a story.
We began by having a competition between boys and girls who could come up with the most onomatopoeia words. We used these words to create a visual representation of the word.

We wrote onomatopoeia poems. Each line had to begin with a sound word. We had the choice of writing about summer or superheroes.
Swish! Swish! The waves are crashing on the shore.

Glug! Glug! Glug as the wind blows the leaves and makes them fly in the air.
Chirp! Chirp! The baby bird sang all day.
