Adding Money

Marshall and Tyler working together to work out how to
make amounts

Dom and Coopa thinking together

We are learning to add money in different ways to make the same total.

We had different items we could choose to purchase and needed to come up with 3 different ways we could pay for them.

We really had to think about if we were adding on ones, tens or hundreds.

We chose something we would like to buy and estimated what it might cost. We added worked out what dollars we could use to pay for it.

Writing Hooks

We made ice volcanoes they were lots of fun. We were thinking of all the amazing vocabulary we could use in our writing while creating and erupting the ice volcanoes.
Bailee adding water to make the volcano
Dom stirring the water and baking soda

Tyler tipping in the baking soda to make the ice volcano

Sienna ready ready...????

Exploring the volcano

We are learning to use a hook to begin our writing. A hook makes the reader feel excited to keep reading our writing. When we write we are always thinking about the reader.

Spit spit the volcano started to erupt. The lava steamed to the bottom of the crevices down the side...it looked like red boiling water sliding to the bottom fast.
Angus M

Spit! Spit! The volcano was going to erupt bursting lava out of the crater.
Mason

Spitter spatter as the volcano started to work. Drip drip lava is leaking down the side. "Oh no its going to explode run"
Niamh

Boom! Boom went the volcano exploding everywhere.
Ruben

Rumble Rumble the volcano wasn't dormant anymore it erupted with fire hot lava.
Joseph

Boom! The massive volcano exploded. Out of the crater came the lava it was boiling hot.
Sam G

Fizz! Bubble! Boom! The icy volcano exploded slowly deep out of the crater.
Sienna

Sizzle! Sizzle went the volcano just before it erupted. Lava blasted out burning hot fire.
Charlie

Bubble bubble the volcano started to erupt. Lava ran down the icy sides of the volcano.
Blake

Silence...until rumble rumble bubbles started to bubble in the crater.
Jordan

Suddenly... a mysterious bubble popped out of nowhere. Fizz fizz fizz as the red water made more bubbles.
Marshall

Here are the instructions if you want to make one at home.

Onomatopoeia

We have been learning about sound words called onomatopoeia. Great authors can use onomatopoeia in their writing so the reader can imagine what sounds are happening in a story.

We began by having a competition between boys and girls who could come up with the most onomatopoeia words. We used these words to create a visual representation of the word.

We wrote onomatopoeia poems. Each line had to begin with a sound word. We had the choice of writing about summer or superheroes.

Swish! Swish! The waves are crashing on the shore.
Crack as I  bite into a freezing cold ice block.
Buzz! Buzz! Buzz as the bees admire the pretty flowers.
Glug! Glug! Glug as the wind blows the leaves and makes them fly in the air.
Chirp! Chirp! The baby bird sang all day.

Authors Charlotte and Sienna

Clip-pity clop I am riding on my pony.
Swish! Swosh! The water went as I floated down the lazy river.
Drip drip honey dripped down from the bees hive.
Snap snap the crab is snapping on my leg in the water.

Authors Chahat and Maddie

Splash! Splash went the waves.
Slurp slurp the ice cream dribbled down my chin.
Drip drip my sweat went down my back.
Squelch! Squelch the suncream went over my body.

Authors Katie and Angus M

Water Fun

Mrs H and Mrs Ramsay want to congratulate all the wonderful children from Room 1617. You were wonderful role models for all the children in Kowhai Hub. We love how you showed kindness, patience and encouraged the younger children to try new things. You made us very proud to be your teachers.

Artists in Residence

We are learning to make choices in how we explore, create and share our learning.

Children chose how they wanted to explore, create and share a self portrait. Children had the option of creating a 'Minecraft' or 'Picasso' portrait. It took lots of perseverance and determination to complete each portrait.

Picasso style faces are tricky because they have two views, one half of the face is a side view and the other half is a front on view. Just like Picasso, children used bright colours and unusual shapes.

Minecraft style portraits take lots of perseverance and determination because they are created one square at a time. Each square has to be carefully laid to help create different shapes on the portrait.

It is fantastic that every portrait is different - just like the special Superhero artists who created them.
